My brief answer:
For a brief answer to your question, I believe selling and marketing are very much intertwined. In fact, the more connected they are in any given organization, the more effective both are going to be at accomplishing their goals. But, that — their goals — is the main way selling and marketing differ. The goal of marketing is to identify potential customers and educate them in various ways to lead them toward a sale. The goal of sales is to serve the customer so effectively before, during, and after a purchase, that customer never questions or regrets their decision to do business with the organization.
